Hong Kong’s net migration (the number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants) is at 30,000 per year. To compare this figure with other countries, the net migration rate is used. Hong Kong has a net migration rate of +1.69 migrants per 1,000 population, putting it 51st out of the 222 territories in the world.
Only 18% of Hong Kong's population live on Hong Kong Island, while 29% live in Kowloon and the largest proportion, totalling 52%, live in the New Territories. Costs are generally cheaper the further north you go and, due to the prevalence of superstition, big discounts can be found on properties near cemeteries.
