Isle Of Man's ICT Sector Work Permit Waiver 'A Success'

The Isle of Man's work permit exemption for skilled workers in the ICT and e-Business sectors has been in high demand since it was introduced in March 2016.

Returns submitted by employers show that 17 local businesses have so far made use of the new exemption, employing 76 additional skilled and experienced workers as a result.

Laurence Skelly, Minister for the Department of Economic Development, commented: "The exemptions were brought to [the parliament, Tynwald] last year to assist local employers in growing their businesses through acquiring additional skilled workers that could not be sourced on-island. They have been a success with employers who can attract talent swiftly with the added security often needed for relocation. We will continue to monitor the impact of the exemptions and will benchmark the scheme going forward."

Kurt Roosen, CEO of the Manx ICT Association, commented: "We feel that the work permit exemption has been a huge success in terms of giving our members more confidence in recruitment and the ability to attract people to the island to meet the clear challenge of the skills gap. The pool of workers needs to increase because the opportunities are growing on the island. This is good news for both the sector and for the Isle of Man."

The Department said it will continue to offer the exemptions to local employers and is considering further reforms to the work permit system to support the island's economic growth.
