Contributed by Welcome Center Malta, 22 July, 2019

Over the past years, the Maltese Islands were experiencing increase in rental prices of property across the whole country, with the most affected areas being Sliema and St Julian's. Some of the reasons that caused this was due to the large demand from may international corporations moving to Malta and in order to tackle such issue, the Government of Malta decided to publish a property rent reform to cap rent prices.

Below is the Property Rent reform summarised

This is expected to come into force in January 2020. The main aim of this property rent reform is to increase security and the rights for tenants while controlling undeclared rental income. Despite not impacting the market pricing directly, it provides tenants security in a way that during their existing contract, rental prices are capped at 5%.
