Where to buy furniture for expats in Spain and Portugal

There is nothing nicer than being able to sit outside relaxing in a warm summer breeze, and if you are an expat living in Spain or Portugal this may very well be one of the attractions that helped you make the decision to move abroad, whether for retirement or for an adventure.

Of course, if you are fortunate enough to get the amount of sunshine that these countries offer then you will be spending a fair amount of your time outside. And, in the hottest months, this will mean eating outside as well, and this will mean that you will want to invest in some good quality outside furniture.

Ask around

Whether you are living in an established expat community or have made friends amongst the locals it is likely that most of your neighbours will already have outdoor furniture. Ask them where they might recommend buying outdoor seating and tables from. If you are working you may also like to ask your colleagues. You could use these recommendations as a starting point; visit the shops that have been recommended and take a look at what is on offer, there is a good chance that you will be able to take a look at lots of different options. However, if you are looking for something that is a little different then you may want to shop further afield.

Where else might I look for furniture?

There are some fantastic websites out there that specialise in furniture for outdoors and these can open you up to a lot more options than you may be able to find locally. Take for example Lazy Susan, they offer a fantastic range of outdoor furniture from small bistro sets to larger tables that can seat anywhere from 4 to 10+ people. The advantage from buying from a company like this is that all of the information on their website is in English so you can be absolutely clear on what you are buying.

Purchasing Abroad

When it comes to buying from the internet it is always good to look for a company who are well established and have been in business for a number of years so that you know you can trust them. Even if you speak good Spanish or Portuguese, terms and conditions are not always so easy to understand so purchasing from a company based in the UK will ensure that you understand the terms and conditions, the shipping information and even the details of the item that you are buying fully, this ensures that there are no nasty surprises.

Choose a reliable, well-established supplier

You'll certainly want to opt for a well-established company that over the years has built up a reliable and trustworthy distribution network that allows them to ship garden furniture all over the world quickly and efficiently. This can be a real bonus for an expat living abroad who is looking for something similar to the furniture that they might have purchased had they still been living in the UK, and that might be a little different to what they can find locally.

Weather is still a factor

Whilst you will probably not need to worry too much about the prospect of your outdoor furniture rusting or rotting in Spain or Portugal warmer weather can still have a detrimental effect. Cast aluminium or steel makes a great choice for your seating regardless of the climate that you live in, will be a low maintenance choice and will look like new for a lot longer – which will leave you with more time to enjoy the sunshine and your new expat life.
