Shopping for Expats in Cyprus

Shopping in Cyprus is very similar to that in other Western countries. There are many supermarkets, an abundance of local and specialist shops, some markets and well-developed online shopping.

The main supermarket chains in Cyprus are

In addition, there is the international chain Lidl. Most supermarkets are outside the town or city centre, though there are always firm transport links. Many big supermarkets also have small convenience stores all over the country.

As with elsewhere, supermarkets offer a wide range of goods at competitive prices. However there should also be markets in the city and town centres, where you can buy fresh, cheap vegetables, meat and seafood.

To buy fashionable clothes, household goods and electrical equipment, you normally need to go to the centre of one of the larger towns. Nearly every town or city has at least one main shopping street, where you can find lots of shops providing different goods and services. You may find large shopping centres or department shores on such streets.

Online Shopping

Online shopping is popular in Cyprus. Most of large stores and supermarkets have their own websites. Cyprus Online Shopping is a useful directory website. You also can buy what you want online from all over the world, such as from Amazon and eBay. However, as this is viewed as importing goods, it may incur custom duties and VAT. Some goods are not even allowed to enter Cyprus, so before making a purchase you are unsure about, you should carefully check this Fedex page.

Shopping Hours

Typical opening hours are 08:00 to 21:00 from Monday to Saturday. Shops open later on Sunday, typically around 11:00, though some in smaller towns do not open at all. Additionally, some observe early closing on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.  Some shopping centres are open longer, until midnight, especially in the tourist areas. In summer, some shops close from 14:00 to 17:00.
