Social and Cultural Traits in Australia

Social Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander peoples are believed by archeologists to have first arrived on the continent between 62,000 and 75,000 years ago. In the 225 years since British settlement, Aboriginal peoples have suffered from the impact of disease, violence and the spread of foreign settlement and customs, though a number of Indigenous communities in more remote areas still live according to the world's oldest continuing cultural traditions. Modern Australia maintains strong links to this heritage with notions such as 'walkabout' and 'dreamtime', and objects such as the didgeridoo and boomerang, featuring prominently in outward portrayals of national identity.
