There are seven potentially key stages at this year's Tour. Stage 5 will see the majority of contenders trying their best to avoid losing time, as they must face many dangerous cobbled sections that GC contenders are often unprepared for. However, any climbers who do slip up will have chances to pull back time on the five summit finishes: Stage 10, Stage 13, Stage 14, Stage 17, and Stage 18.
The time trial from Bergerac to Périgueux is the only day that riders must tackle alone, but its position on the penultimate day could see it being decisive if any contenders are close after the Pyrenees. The only mountain day without a summit finish, Stage 16, has less potential to be critical but could still provide opportunities to riders with good descending skills. Besides the above mentioned stages, the five hilly days also have the potential to throw up a surprise.
