Social and Cultural Traits in India

Social India is one of the most religiously diverse nations in the world, and is the birthplace of four of the world's major religions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism). There are several distinct cultures across the Indian subcontinent, some of which are several millennia old. Historically, India had a caste system which segregated people according to a traditional hereditary occupation. Although it is now legally forbidden to discriminate a person based on their caste, the practice can still be found, and particularly so in rural areas.
