Solo Living and Dating for Expats in the United States Of America

Solo living has become popular in the US in the past few decades. It is especially common in large cities or towns with many people choosing to live alone as they enjoy the feeling of freedom, independence and the peace of mind.

If you are moving to the US alone you may feel lonely for the first few weeks. However, soon you will meet new people every day. This could be through work or your new neighbours as Americans are generally very friendly and welcoming to newcomers. If you would like to meet other expats or people with similar interests there are many social groups you can join.

If time is a bit short and you find getting out to meet new people hard, you may like to look into dating websites. These are a great avenue to find new friends or relationships. There are many dating websites for people based in the US. Some are even designed to meet a person’s specific preference, for example Christian Mingle focuses on Christian singles.

You can search online with certain key words to find a dating website such as US dating.  Often you will find articles or reviews on each website which may help you with your decision. For example, this article, https://www.bestdatingsite.org/american/, gives an opinion of the top four dating websites in the US as below:

  • Match.com
  • eHarmony
  • Christian Mingle
  • PerfectMatch.com

Normally, you need to register yourself and create your profile when you use their services. The registration is just a few simple steps and many websites are free to sign up. Although you may need to pay a membership fee or buy credits (sometimes called stamps) to see further details of other members. Membership fees differ according to the length of your subscription. Some dating websites do offer free services. However, there is a general view that paid dating sites provide better services than free ones.

Always remember to be aware of security when entering personal information into a website or speaking to someone online. Generally speaking, big popular websites will have better protection for your personal information.

You also need to be aware of the online dating scam. This often involves someone meeting others online with the sole intent of defrauding money out of them. Often earning your trust before requesting money. It is highly recommended to read this article on the FBI website explaining online dating scams. https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2012/february/dating-scams_021412.

You can find useful information such as safety tips on most dating websites. You can also find some dating tips to avoid such scams by searching online using key words such as ‘dating scam’ or ‘romance scam’.

If you suspect you are being scammed, you should stop contacting and paying any money to the fraudsters. You can submit a report to the Internet Crime Complaint Centre through the following link: https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx.
