British Embassy To Offer Advice At Overseas Property Exhibition

By ExpatBriefing.com Editorial 24 September, 2013

The UK's largest overseas property exhibition will be taking place at the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham from September 27 to 29, and officials from the British Embassy in Madrid will be on-hand with free advice about the pitfalls of purchasing property abroad.

The event is tied in with a popular television program in which Britons seeking homes abroad receive advice from international property experts, and the exhibition attracts thousands every spring and fall. There will be seminars with presenters from the program, as well as panel sessions with industry insiders and Q&A sessions with experts. There will also be dedicated feature areas and seminars relating to France, Italy, Portugal, and Florida, and the event will offer a chance to meet agents, developers, and service providers.

According to the Foreign Office, most Britons have bought properties in Spain without experiencing any issues, but some have been caught up in serious property problems, causing emotional distress and negative personal and financial effects. In particular, there has been a problem with buildings that have turned out to have been built illegally.

Britain's Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman, was quoted as saying that the Embassy is engaged with Spanish authorities "at all levels" to encourage them to deal with property issues affecting British nationals, but that it is unable to take action on individual cases. He added that expats "can play an important role by encouraging friends and family to do their research and get impartial legal advice before moving abroad."

According to the Spanish College of Registrars, Britons have purchased 12,000 properties in Spain in the past three years, representing nearly nearly 20 percent of properties bought by foreigners.

The Foreign Office website also has detailed advice for Britons seeking to buy a property in Spain.
