Hong Kong tops the list of most expensive cities for expatriates according to global consulting firm Mercer's 22nd annual Cost of Living Survey.

Luanda, Angola is now in second position, with Zurich and Singapore remaining in third and fourth positions. Tokyo has risen to the fifth most expensive city for expatriates, up six places from last year. Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked sixth and appears for the first time in the top 10, moving up from thirteenth place.

Other cities appearing in the top 10 of Mercer's costliest cities for expatriates are Shanghai (7) and Beijing (10) in China, Geneva (8) in Switzerland, and N'Djamena in Chad (9). The world's least expensive cities for expatriates, according to Mercer's survey, are Windhoek, Namibia (209), Cape Town, South Africa (208), and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (207).

In the Americas, New York rose five places to rank 11. San Francisco (26) and Los Angeles (27) climbed eleven and nine places, respectively, from last year, while Seattle (83) jumped 23 places. The rises are primarily due to the strengthening US dollar.
