The United States is offering 50,000 immigrant visas through its 2016 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, registration for which is open from noon on October 1. The program offers these persons permanent residency status on arrival in the USA.

The program aims to encourage immigration by persons from nations where US immigration rates are currently low. Eligible individuals can register between October 1 and November 3, 2014, to take part in the lottery. Visas will be distributed across six geographic regions and no single country will receive more than seven percent of the available visas.

Individuals from countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are ineligible for the visa. These countries are: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (Mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, the United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland), and Vietnam.
