Western Union customers in a number of countries are now able to make transfers to major banks in India within minutes, the money transfer company has announced.

The new delivery speed applies to customers sending funds from the USA, the UK, France, Germany, and Australia. Transfers can be made in minutes using cash or debit cards at participating Agent locations, or by using debit or credit cards through Western Union's website.

Western Union says that the move represents an improvement to the direct-to-bank money transfer services it launched last year, which deliver funds within one banking day to 140 banks in India.

The service is being provided in collaboration with IndusInd Bank and uses the National Payments Corporation of India's Immediate Payment Service platform.

Western Union's President and CEO, Hikmet Ersek, said that the company now has connections to transfer money into bank accounts in more than 50 countries, but he said its service in India is leading the way: "This is a major win for our customers. We are giving them the choice of placing cash on the counter or using cashless send options and yet sending directly into a bank account from major centers around the world."
