How to Save Money at Your Home While You are Away

Whether you are just leaving for the day or you are leaving for 2 years, you want to make sure that your home will be taken care of while you are away. This not only means keeping it safe, but also making sure that your home is not wasting your money when you are not there. Implementing practices to save money while you are away from home not only keeps your home safer, but it also decreases your impact on the environment, so there are a lot of reasons why you should be saving money while you are away from your home.

There are a few different ways you can make your home save you money while you are gone. You can utilize a few methods or every method possible, but no matter what, you will cut your expenses and have more money to spend while you are gone. Here are some ways to save money at home while you are away.

Implement free security measures

It is always a good idea to have a security alarm system for your home, but those systems can be very expensive to maintain. You can consider lowering your service and instead implementing some free measures to keep your home safe. Things like dummy cameras, extra signs from your security alarm system and a car in your driveway can help ward off intruders from your home and prevent a costly break in. It is also a good idea to enlist the help of a neighbor to keep your lawn and hedges maintained to eliminate hiding places.

Turn off and unplug everything

There should be nothing in your home using power while you are not there. Unplug and turn off everything that uses power in your home. This includes all appliances, like the microwave and the washing machine, and entertainment items, like the TV and internet router. Even if an appliance is turned off, it is still using power when it is plugged in. There may be some items that require an exception, like freezers, but depending on how long you are going to be away, you might consider thawing and draining them before you leave to save even more money.

Set your thermostat

You don’t need to be keeping your home at a comfortable temperature while you are away, so you can set your thermostat at more reasonable temperature that will save you money on heating and cooling. You can even buy automated thermostats that will adjust the temperature automatically, so you don’t have to worry about your home going above or below the maximum temperature.

Cancel or pause services to your home

There are a lot of services that we receive at our homes that we often forget about when we leave. Think about all the extra bills that you receive at your home each month and how many of those could be canceled or paused while you are away from home. You can cancel or pause things like your internet, cable, magazine subscriptions, and even your Ohio natural gas.
